In this module, we explore shifting our perspectives on Trans and Gender-Diverse (TGD) from a focus on disparities to a focus on resiliencies and strengths, and how health centers can build and promote this strength.
Learning Resources — LGBTQIA+ Children and Youth
In this module for pediatric and family medicine care teams, we will identify best and promising practices for transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth, explore how gender affirming clinical care supports the mental health of TGD youth, and learn how providers can help guide families in accessing psychosocial and community resources to support TGD youth.
In this talk from the 2022 Advancing Excellence in Transgender Health Care Conference, Dr. Aude Henin discusses evidence-based behavioral health care for gender diverse youth.
This session will contextualize mental health inequities across diagnostic categories within a gender minority stress framework, propose culturally responsive tailoring of evidence-based clinical practices, and offer strategies for building inclusive, affirming, and trauma-informed environments within health centers in order to optimize behavioral health outcomes for youth.
Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) children, adolescents, and their families are increasingly seeking out pediatricians and mental health providers for education, treatment, and services related to gender-affirming care. TGD children, adolescents, and their families are looking for care that is welcoming, affirming, and safe. However, due to a lack of training and information about providing gender-affirming care, providers may feel unprepared to offer this level of care to children and adolescents in TGD communities. This toolkit is a curated list of resources created by the National LGBTQIA+ Health Education Center to aid medical and behavioral health providers who are either starting on their journey in gender-affirming care for TGD youth or are looking to refresh or further their learning and understanding of creating safe, supportive, affirming health care experiences for TGD children and adolescents.
This panel-style presentation will feature experts from community-led organizations whose work highlights the importance of assessing and supporting the resiliency of TGD youth to improve health outcomes. Participants of this webinar will discover strategies for developing meaningful and sustainable relationships to community partners that provide resiliency building opportunities for youth.
Webinar participants will consider the relationship of body size vs. the overall health of the body for LGBTQIA+ youth and learn how health centers can support LGBTQIA+ children and youth in developing a healthy perception of their bodies. Participants will explore the relationship of childhood identity development to beauty and health standards and learn strategies for providing, or referring to affirming services for LGBTQIA+ youth, including patients experiencing body dysmorphia and/or dysphoria.
