Health care professionals play an important role not only in delivering health care, but also in assisting transgender patients with non-medical aspects of gender-affirmation. Health care professionals must provide documentation for insurance appeals, gender marker changes, or medical leave. Patients may tell providers of legal problems they are experiencing and ask for help with advocacy at school or work. Caring for minors raises challenges when parents disagree about treatments. In this talk from the 2020 Advancing Excellence in Transgender Health conference, participants will gain a basic understanding of legal issues facing trans people and the current state of legal protections available so that you can become an effective advocate and resource for trans patients.
