Susan Stred, MD

Dr. Stred is a graduate of Williams College and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. She completed pediatric residency training at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY, followed by fellowships in Pediatric Endocrinology and Physiology at the University of Michigan. Her career was spent as a pediatric endocrinologist at SUNY Upstate and its Golisano Children’s Hospital, retiring from clinical practice with the rank of Clinical Professor of Pediatrics. She remains active in medical education. Professional interests included pituitary disorders, particularly those resulting from traumatic brain injury; the hormonal deficits suffered by survivors of childhood cancer; Turner syndrome; intersex issues; and health literacy and informed consent. She served on Upstate University Hospital’s Ethics Committee, in the graduate program in Cell and Molecular Biology, and in a successful community-led campaign to amend New York State’s policies for EMS treatment of individuals with adrenal insufficiency. For the last 15 years, Dr. Stred has been a medical consultant and advisor for the largest national support organization for intersex individuals, and has been called upon for other intersex education and advocacy roles.
