Stewart Adelson is an adult, child and adolescent psychiatrist, an Assistant Clinical Professor at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at Weill Cornell Medical College. His career includes a focus on sexual and gender development and includes clinical, scholarly, educational, and administrative roles related to the wellbeing and care of LGBTQ youth.
He is the principal author of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry's practice guidelines on care for LGBT youth, and the lead author on several peer-reviewed papers and chapters on sexual and gender development, including the chapter on LGB youth in Nelson Pediatrics. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a recipient of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry's Presidential Scholar Award and of the Dennis Anderson award of the Lesbian and Gay Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Association. He was a 2014-15 Clinical Research Scholar in and Commendation recipient of the Global Health Division at Harvard Medical School Global Clinical Scholars Research Training Program.
He is also a member of the Group for Advancement of Psychiatry’s LGBT committee, and of the Advisory Committee of the global LGBT program of Human Rights Watch. He serves as a reviewer for peer reviewed journals including the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, the Journal of Gay & Lesbian Mental Health, and Oxford University Press, is a member of the editorial boards of the International Journal of Transgenderism and Psychodynamic Psychiatry, and was Lead Guest Editor for the December 2016 volume of Pediatric Clinics of North America on LGBT Youth.
